Bad Breath

Though you can’t always stop genetic hair loss without medication or another hair loss treatment, there are ways to prevent hair loss caused by breakage and styling damage.

If you are experiencing hair loss and want to minimize the appearance, the right cut hairstyle can make your hair look fuller and thicker than it really is.

Nourishing and protecting your hair and scalp are the keys to maintaining a healthy head of hair. Follow these hair care rules:

Stimulate your scalp: Whether it’s a gentle fingertip massage or a hair conditioner with invigorating ingredients like menthol, peppermint, or rosemary, any thing that stimulates the scalp promotes hair growth.

Take a break from the hair dryer: Hair strands are composed of dead protein, so the more you expose hair to heat, the more susceptible it is to damage and breakage. Let hair dry naturally whenever possible.

Avoid chemical overload: The more chemical processes your hair is subjected to the greater the potential for damage, breakage and hair loss. Try to limit hair coloring, bleaching and perms.

Protect hair from the sun: Every time you head outdoor (for a day at the beach or any other outdoor activity) your hair is exposed to the sun. Just as your skin can get too much sun, so can your hair, leaving it dried out, damage and vulnerable to breakage and hair loss. Use a comfortable hat when you go out in the sun to protect your hair.

Though you can protect hair with a hat when you’re in the sun, wearing a hat or a heavy helmet much of the time can lead to hair loss because your hair can become damage or broken. To limit the damage, remove your hat or helmet when you don’t need it for safety.

The way you have your hair cut and styled can make thinning hair less noticeable:

Wear your hair shorter: The longer and heavier hair is, the more it tends to separate and that make any balding areas (and your attempts to cover them) more obvious.

Try a layered look: Have layers cut into your hair to give it more texture, which can make hair appear fuller and thicker. This may help hide bald spots or areas that are thinning out a bit.

Skip heavy gels and other styling products: When you try to style or slick hair with thick, heavy products, like texturing or sculpting gels, you’re weighing down your hair. That tends to separate the hair and again, make the problem more obvious.

The more you do to keep hair healthy and prevent hair loss and breakage, the better your hair will look and feel. If you experience some hair thinning, try a new styling technique or cut that will complement your changing hair. But if your hair loss becomes significant, visit a dermatologist to discuss effective ways to treat the condition.
